Seminar Site & Dates
The 2024 HOBY Kentucky seminar will take place at Berea College from June 6-9.
Cost & Capacity
Who can become an ambassador?
We have a tendency to think leaders are the top of their class, have a 4.0 GPA, extremely outgoing and involved in numerous clubs/sports. While those are amazing achievements, they do not apply to all types of leaders. At HOBY, we know there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership. One of the main goals of the seminar is to develop ambassadors' personal leadership style through activities, guest speakers, group discussions and peer networking.
Additionally, we are seeking high school sophomores who are passionate about social change. We are looking for individuals who are already actively involved in serving their communities or are eager to begin making a positive impact. If you care deeply about the issues facing our society and have innovative ideas for addressing them, we want you at our seminar!
Lastly, we look for ambassadors who embrace values of kindness, respect, and inclusivity. We encourage participation from a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives. We want our seminar to be a place where every ambassador can thrive.
What will ambassadors do?
Over the span of four days, student ambassadors will be guided through a host of activities, learning modules, group discussions and projects that will foster growth and perspective. Students will be lodged in on-campus housing (with the expectation that they will be staying over night and have at least one randomly assigned roommate). Meals will be provided three times a day.
Day 1: Personal Leadership
In this phase, student ambassadors unlock their potential through self-discovery and reflection.
After completing the personal leadership curriculum, student ambassadors will be able to:
In the second phase, student ambassadors apply their newfound awareness to their interactions with others. Through this process of learning about others’ leadership abilities, identifying common goals, overcoming team obstacles, and developing an understanding of diverse perspectives, student ambassadors develop their group leadership skills.
After completing the group leadership curriculum, student ambassadors will be able to:
HOBY student ambassadors apply their newfound understanding of personal and group leadership to serving others. In the service leadership phase, student ambassadors are challenged to make an impact on their local community. Here, they learn about the perspectives of community leaders and the value of making a positive difference within the place they call home.
After completing the service leadership curriculum, student ambassadors will be able to:
Ambassadors reflect on "life after HOBY" by discussing what plans they have to enact positive social change once they arrive back to their communities. We also discuss the importance of gratitude, as the seminar would not be possible without our amazing volunteers and generous donors. Additionally, ambassadors are encouraged to attend the World Leadership Congress (WLC), a weeklong program designed to empower rising junior and senior high school students to become more confident, caring leaders, and active global citizens.
What happens after seminar?
Student ambassadors truly put their service leadership learning into action after the seminar concludes.
New HOBY alumni are challenged to complete 100 hours of service to their communities in the year following their seminar. These Leadership for Service (L4S) hours are a tangible way for our new alumni to apply their passion and newly built leadership skills toward making a positive impact. Over 5,000,000 service hours have been logged by HOBY alumni since 1998, and that number continues to grow with HOBY alumni logging thousands of hours of service each year. As a certifying organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service award, we honor hundreds of students each year as they complete their service challenge.
HOBY Alumni are a part of a community of over 500,000 leaders from around the world. HOBY Alumni are change makers in business, government, nonprofit organizations, the arts, and more! We are proud to offer ways to stay connected, continue your leadership education, and serve our collective community!
This vast network is invaluable as you enroll in college, look for career advice, move to a new city, or just want to connect with fellow Alumni. Being part of HOBY’s alumni network offers ongoing opportunities for new connections, growth, and leadership development.
